untouchable forms
untouchable forms
My art piece is inspired by Plato's Theory of the Forms, by exploring the tension between appearance and genuine reality utilising a clear acrylic safe. The safe emphasises how objects in our environment are only imperfect representations of perfect Forms that we cannot directly access, such as Beauty and the Good. In the same way that the flower bush confined in the safe is visible but physically unreachable, the actual Form it reflects is beyond our reach. According to Plato, a Form is the perfect and unchanging essence of an object, existing outside of time. Similarly, the contents of the safe are conceptually excluded from temporal change, preserved, and untouchable. This implies that the true reality is not what we observe but what exists beyond our perception. Although the flower bush may wither and die, the essence of its beauty remains, reinforcing the notion that it is merely an imperfect embodiment of the eternal Form of Beauty.
